Meet the Farmers – Q&A with Wendy, John, Andrew and Katrina Nixon!

We’d like to introduce you to the farmers from ‘F. Nixon & Co.’ – Wendy, John, Andrew and Katrina Nixon!

Where is your farm located?

In Roslyn – in the Southern Tablelands of NSW (at an elevation of 1000m).

How many cattle do you run & which breed(s) are they?

We run approximately 360 Angus cows and their calves, plus replacement heifers.

Which Teys programs/brands are you currently supplying?

We supply beef for Teys Certified Angus & Teys Riverine Premium Beef.

What is your family’s history in the industry (i.e. how long have they been farming)?

The Nixon family have been farming at “Merryvale” (the name of our property) since 1865, with the 4th & 5th generations now managing the day to day activities. “Merryvale” is run as a beef cattle operation using purebred Angus cattle to produce high quality beef products.

What do you love most about producing beef cattle?

We have a passion for what we do; we are effectively “grass-farmers,” and through selecting good genetics and careful pasture management we can produce a high quality product that we are proud of.

What is unique about your operation that helps you to produce quality beef cattle?

We use performance recording, individual animal records and genetic selection to continue to increase the productivity and quality of our herd. We also use our MSA carcase feedback to help tailor our management and herd sire selection. We manage our pastures and conserve fodder to allow us to make sure we can continue to maintain our animals consistently even through climatic challenges such as drought or snow.

Do you have any recent success or awards with your cattle you would like to share?

We were recognised in the MSA’s ‘Top 100 producers in NSW’ last year, which we were pretty stoked about!

If you could give one key message to consumers of your beef, what would it be?

It would be that we hope they enjoy our high-quality beef products and want to enjoy them again soon!
