Our Quality Livestock Guarantee + the 5 Freedoms of Animal Welfare

At Teys Australia, we guarantee our great quality livestock through our commitment to ‘best-practice’ standards for all of our business operations. In particular, we ensure this quality through our commitment to exceptional animal welfare.

Our Approach to Animal Welfare

We are 100% committed to ensuring that cattle entrusted to our care are treated humanely at all times.

All of our processing facilities operate under the Australian Livestock Processing Industry Animal Welfare Certification System (we’ll save ourselves a mouthful and call it the AAWCS).

This basically means that all of our livestock under our control are treated humanely and managed in accordance with best-practice animal welfare standards.

In order to maintain our commitment to ethical practice, we continually improve and promote the importance of our animal welfare handling practices, collaborate with animal welfare experts and participate in national animal welfare initiatives.

The Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare

The Australian Lot Feeders Association (ALFA) has produced a series of videos on how the ‘5 Freedoms of Animal Welfare’ can apply in a feedlot setting. These freedoms are equally applicable to pasture raised cattle.

FREEDOM 1

Freedom from hunger and thirst. Providing a diet that meets all the cattle’s nutritional needs.

FREEDOM 2

Freedom from discomfort. Providing an appropriate environment for cattle, including shelter and a comfortable resting place.

FREEDOM 3

Freedom from pain, injury or disease. Prevention of pain, injury or disease through the rapid and appropriate diagnosis and treatment of animals that have a condition.

FREEDOM 4

Freedom to express normal behaviour. Providing cattle with sufficient space to lie down, the opportunity to interact with other cattle, as well as adequate roughage in the diet to spend time ruminating.

FREEDOM 5

Freedom from fear and distress. Providing animals with conditions and treatment that avoids mental suffering.
