The Winter Olympics are currently being held in PyeongChang, South Korea. They began on the 9th of February and will continue until the 25th. In honour of this event, we thought we’d share 4 tasty Korean beef recipes that are sure to get you into the Olympic spirit!
A Little Bit About Korean Cuisine
Korean cuisine has evolved through centuries of social, political, cultural and environmental change. The cuisine is largely based on rice, vegetables and meats. Traditional Korean meals are served with a number of side dishes (‘banchan’) – in particular, Kimchi (fermented cabbage – it’s much tastier than it sounds!) is served at almost every meal. Commonly-used ingredients include sesame oil, soy sauce, doenjang (fermented bean paste), salt, garlic, ginger, gochujang (fermented red chilli paste) and napa cabbage.
Bulgogi (Korean Barbequed Beef)
Bulgogi is a traditional Korean dish consisting of thinly sliced beef that is marinated in soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil and garlic and then BBQed. Bulgogi is great for sharing with friends and family – just invite them over, switch on the Olympics and enjoy!
Beef in Lettuce
In this recipe, spicy pan-grilled beef is tucked into soft butter lettuce with a spoonful of steamed rice, dipped in soy chilli sauce and eaten in the hands. This recipe is easy, really quick to make, healthy and tasty!
Mexi-Korean Beef Tacos
The combination of tender, flavoursome beef with soft tortillas, kimchi, coriander, peanuts and mayonnaise is so good it’s ridiculous. This recipe definitely inspires California food truck vibes and it is perfect for a casual meal with friends.
Bibimbap is the Korean word for ‘mixing rice’ – which is exactly what you are meant to do once you serve this meal. You put the rice in a bowl, add the toppings and then mix it all together until you have a delicious combination of sweet, spicy, umami flavour. This recipe uses sweet carrot, juicy zucchini and beef that is tossed with garlic, ginger, and soy.
